The Cell Phone
In the 1990's, riding the popularity of instant messaging, cellphones became a major cultural icon. In 1992, the first ever SMS was sent from a cellular device. The increasing simplicity and decreasing size of cellphones were making them cheaper and cheaper to manufacture. As a result, Millions of Americans could begin buying small, 2G phones. These new phones pushed the internet further, in fact, the first ever smartphone, the Blackberry, was launched in 1999. Unfortunately, mobile cell towers were not strong enough to keep up with the consumers demand for speed while searching the web, so the Blackberry did not perform well enough to make a major impact with consumers. But, it was a step towards mobile data sharing.
